Knowledge of German

What you need to know already – and what you’ll learn at Landheim

Admission requires German language skills at level B2 (Years 9 and 10) or B1 (Years 7 and 8), depending on the year group. This means that the language of instruction is always German. English is, of course, an important subject, but we do not offer lessons taught in English or a qualification such as the International Baccalaureate (IB).

Most international pupils acquire their German language skills in advance at specialist language schools. Once at Landheim, pupils also receive DaF courses (4 hours a week) to continuously improve their German language skills. At the end of each school year, there is an examination set by the Goethe-Institut. In addition, work in the German as a Foreign Language (DaF) lessons is integrated into the regular curriculum; for example, content from subjects such as German and History is revised and explained.

We also offer language courses at Landheim during the autumn half-term and A-level preparation courses during the Easter half-term.

Language and Culture Workshop

We also offer a language and culture workshop for our new international pupils in Years 8 and 9, which they are required to attend during their first year at Landheim. As well as focusing on oral expression, they gain a better understanding of life in Germany and German society through excursions to local attractions, theatre performances or cinema visits in Munich and Landsberg, and by sampling German and international cuisine:

Through a variety of creative and interesting activities, we impart cultural knowledge and promote intercultural diversity to both our international and national pupils.

Medical care

Our pupils have access to our own infirmary staffed by qualified nurses, who are supported in their work by a local GP.

And during the holidays …

If pupils do not wish to undertake the sometimes long journey home during the short holidays, we can organise host families or language courses for the holidays. Just ask us.
